+ Our values
At willaby, we believe that simple is beautiful. Founded in 2014, we make children's clothing and blankets that are meant to stand the test of time, in both design and construction. In our collection you will find pieces that are unisex and versatile, modern yet classic, understated yet out of the ordinary. All items are made from 100% organic or natural fibers, with the highest attention to craft and detail.
Small and ethical production is one of our core values. We partner with skilled local artisans to make our clothing, blankets, and accessories. A small, local company working on industrial machines in a home studio sews our products. A portion of our heirloom blankets and burp cloths are sewn by owner Kim Woods's mother, in her Ohio childhood home. Whenever possible, we use ethically-made fabrics such as organic cotton woven in facilities where workers are paid a fair wage and receive fair benefits.
Sustainability is very important to us. We turn fabric scraps from the cutting table into paper that we use to gift wrap products. Some scraps are donated to art students to make paper for their work. Other scraps are sold to customers at local willaby studio sales.
+ Our background
Formally trained as a painter and informally taught to sew at home, owner/designer Kim Woods believes in the connection between all forms of art and design. Kim attended law school, then quit to pursue her passion for art and design. A graduate of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, her exploration of color and light as a painter influences the palette of fabrics she chooses for each season. Kim has been sewing since the age of 12, and started willaby in its current form after giving birth to her son Henry. She oversees every aspect in our small studio, from design to customer service, to packaging and shipping, to marketing, and stringing wooden teething necklaces.
+ Our name
Willaby was Kim's childhood nickname given by her dad, after a character in her favorite book. Willaby was an avid drawer and dreamer, with a tender heart and a determined spirit. It was with this little girl and the abundant beauty of childhood in mind that our company willaby (changed to a lowercase w) was born.
